Cassava Technologies, owned by Zimbabwean businessman Strive Masiyiwa, is working with US tech giant Nvidia to build Africa’s first AI factory.

Cassava, based in the UK, plans to create a secure and powerful data center using Nvidia’s AI technology. The first facility will open in South Africa by June 2025, with more centers planned in Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria.

This AI factory will help African businesses, governments, and researchers use advanced AI computing. It will allow them to develop smart AI products, improve operations, and keep data within Africa. The factory will run on Nvidia’s supercomputers, making AI training and processing much faster.

Cassava will use its fiber-optic network and data centers to offer AI as a service (AIaaS). This will let African companies create AI solutions for local problems while following global and local regulations.

Helping African Startups

Masiyiwa says this project will bring AI technology to Africa, helping businesses and startups grow. He believes Africa needs strong digital infrastructure to compete in the AI economy.

By working with Nvidia, Cassava will provide the tools needed for AI development, boosting industries like agriculture, healthcare, and finance. Nvidia’s Vice President, Jaap Zuiderveld, says this partnership will help African innovators solve big challenges and create new opportunities.
