The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), along with Amity University, has developed an AI tool called Fertility Predictor. This tool helps detect a genetic condition in men, known as Y chromosome microdeletion (YCMD), which causes infertility. It also predicts the chances of success in IVF (in-vitro fertilization) and other fertility treatments.
In about 50% of couples facing infertility, the problem is with the male partner. YCMD, a major genetic cause, affects 1 in 10 men with infertility. It leads to low sperm production, making it hard for these men to have children naturally. Assisted reproductive techniques like IVF are often their only option.
The Fertility Predictor tool estimates sperm retrieval rates, fertilization rates, pregnancy chances, and live birth rates for men with YCMD. It uses data from over 500 men and applies advanced AI algorithms to provide accurate predictions, with an 80% accuracy rate.
This tool helps couples make informed decisions about fertility treatments. However, experts caution that male children born through IVF from men with YCMD will inherit the condition and face infertility as adults.
The study on this AI tool was published in the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics.
