Instagram Tests AI Tool for Custom Profile Pictures

Instagram is testing a new AI tool that lets users create custom profile pictures. This feature, first revealed by developer Alessandro Paluzzi, would allow Instagram users to personalize their profiles with AI-generated images. Paluzzi shared a screenshot on Threads showing a “Create an AI profile picture” option that appears when updating a profile image.

Details are limited, but it’s rumored that Instagram may use Meta’s Llama AI models to power this feature. This could mean users can generate images from text descriptions or add unique AI styles to their current profile pictures.

This new tool is part of Meta’s bigger plan to add more AI-powered features across its platforms. Instagram already has several AI tools, like the Meta AI chatbot for chatting and an AI rewrite tool for adjusting the tone of direct messages.

In other updates, Instagram recently stopped auto-refreshing the feed every time users open the app, following feedback that the auto-updates disrupted their experience.

Meta is also testing other AI uses, like facial recognition to block scam ads that misuse celebrity images. They are exploring video selfies as a way to verify user identities when accounts are compromised, though this feature is not yet widely available.
