Patrick Soon-Shiong, the owner of the Los Angeles Times, announced on Wednesday that his team is developing an AI-powered tool to reduce bias in news reporting.
Speaking on The Mike Gallagher Show, Soon-Shiong compared the “bias meter” to tools used in healthcare that eliminate human biases to improve decision-making. He explained, “This isn’t about AI making up stories. It’s about using AI to detect bias in news or opinion pieces.”
The tool aims to address confirmation bias, which happens when readers only seek news that matches their views. Soon-Shiong said the bias meter would show contrasting viewpoints for any article, helping readers see both sides of an issue.
He noted, “Readers will understand if an article has some level of bias and can explore a different perspective.”
The AI tool is expected to launch by January and could work similarly to Elon Musk’s platform, X, where comments often add valuable discussions. Soon-Shiong envisions respectful conversations and debates about the news.
In October, Soon-Shiong stopped the Los Angeles Times from endorsing a candidate in the presidential election, following similar decisions by The Baltimore Sun and The Washington Post.
This new initiative is part of his effort to promote fair and balanced reporting.
