NASA and Microsoft are working together to create an AI-powered chatbot called Earth Copilot. This tool will help people easily explore and understand the massive amounts of data collected by NASA’s satellites. These satellites monitor important things like climate change, weather conditions, and ocean temperatures.
Earth Copilot, still in the testing phase, uses Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service. It allows users to ask simple questions, like, “How did Hurricane Ian affect Sanibel Island?” or “What was the impact of COVID-19 on air quality in the U.S.?” The chatbot quickly provides clear answers and helpful insights.
Currently, accessing satellite data can be complicated. It often requires special skills, like knowing technical software and understanding data formats. Tyler Bryson from Microsoft says the new tool could make it easier for everyone—not just experts—to benefit from this information.
Right now, Earth Copilot is only available to NASA researchers. However, NASA plans to expand access in the future. For example, teachers could use it to teach students about climate change, and policymakers could use it to make better decisions on global issues. NASA’s goal is to make satellite data accessible and useful for everyone.
