The Pentagon is developing an artificial intelligence (AI) system to improve military planning and decision-making in Europe and the Indo-Pacific. The AI program, called Thunderforge, is being developed by Scale AI and will help commanders plan military operations, test battle scenarios, and predict threats.
According to the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), Thunderforge will use advanced AI models, simulations, and war games to help military leaders adapt to changing situations. Scale AI is working on the project with Anduril, which provides drone and sensor data analysis, and Microsoft, which develops AI software.
The AI system will be used by U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) and U.S. European Command (EUCOM) for strategic planning and resource management. Admiral Sam Paparo, leader of INDOPACOM, stated that AI can help track Chinese military activities and detect hidden threats.
INDOPACOM is also working on a system called Mission Partner Environment, which allows the U.S. and its allies to share intelligence and monitor threats in real time. Paparo emphasized that AI is not replacing human decision-making but is helping commanders make faster and better decisions.
