Samsung is planning to make its Bixby AI assistant even smarter with the power of Generative AI. A senior executive from Samsung revealed in a talk with CNBC that the company is putting a lot of effort into integrating Generative AI into Bixby.
Bixby was first introduced by Samsung in 2017 alongside the launch of the Galaxy S8 smartphones. Since then, Samsung has expanded Bixby’s availability to include smart TVs, accessories, and smart home appliances. Now, with the rise in popularity of various Generative AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Microsoft’s Copilot, Samsung is aiming to update Bixby to keep up with the latest AI-powered chatbots.
Won-joon Choi, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, expressed, “With the emergence of Generative AI and LLM (large language model) technology, I believe that we have to redefine the role of Bixby so that Bixby could be equipped with Generative AI and become smarter in the future.” This advancement will enable more natural conversations and create interfaces that better support Samsung’s ecosystem of products.
Although Samsung hasn’t provided a specific timeline for the release of the AI-powered Bixby, it’s expected to arrive by the end of 2024 or early 2025, coinciding with the launch of OneUI 7 based on Android 15 OS.
This announcement comes ahead of Apple’s annual developer conference (WWDC 2024) on June 10, where Apple is anticipated to unveil iOS 18 with numerous AI features, including a Generative AI-powered Siri.
