YouTube’s new AI-powered reply tool, meant to help creators respond to comments quickly, is causing problems instead. Called “editable AI-enhanced reply suggestions,” the feature was supposed to save creators time by giving personalized response ideas.
However, the tool has been criticized for creating replies that are strange, inaccurate, or even overly personal. Clint Basinger, a popular creator from LazyGameReviews (LGR), tested the feature and found it to be more amusing than helpful.
For example, when someone commented about a scoop in a Duke Nukem-branded energy drink, the AI confidently replied with wrong information, saying, “It’s not lost, they just haven’t released the scoop yet. It’s coming soon.” In another instance, the AI created a nonsensical response to a lighthearted comment, leaving viewers confused and laughing.
Some replies even touched on personal matters, such as suggesting that Basinger was burned out, which wasn’t true. This made the tool seem invasive and out of touch. Creators worry that using the AI diminishes the authenticity of their interactions and makes fans question if replies are genuine.
YouTube says the AI suggestions are just a starting point for creators to customize, but many find the tool unreliable. Adding to the controversy, YouTube’s AI-generated video ideas and thumbnails have also failed to meet quality expectations, often suggesting unrealistic or poorly crafted content.
As generative AI tools become more common, they raise questions about their role in creative spaces. While they save time, they may also harm trust and authenticity between creators and their audiences—something AI can’t replace.
