Scientists have discovered a way to diagnose Long Covid in children using a blood test and Artificial Intelligence (AI). A study led by researchers from Italy’s Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù found a unique molecular pattern in the blood of children with Long Covid. Using this information, an AI tool achieved 93% accuracy in identifying the condition.

The findings were published in the journal Pediatric Research by the Nature Group. The study was led by Dr. Danilo Buonsenso and a team of pediatric experts, including Dr. Nicola Cotugno and Dr. Piero Valentini.

What is Long Covid?

Long Covid, also called Post-COVID or Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2, occurs when symptoms last for at least 8-12 weeks after the initial infection. It can affect children and adults, impacting daily life. In children, those older than 10 years are more likely to experience Long Covid, even if their initial illness was mild.

Study Details

The researchers analyzed blood samples from 112 children aged 0-19 years. This included:

  • 34 children with Long Covid.
  • 32 children with active COVID-19.
  • 27 children with Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C).
  • 19 healthy children for comparison.

The study identified specific proteins, like CXCL11 and CXCL8, in the blood of children with Long Covid. An AI model analyzed these proteins and was able to diagnose Long Covid with high accuracy (93%), sensitivity (97%), and specificity (86%).

This research offers hope for developing reliable tests to diagnose Long Covid in children, helping doctors better understand and treat the condition.
