A new artificial intelligence (AI) tool solved a superbug mystery in just 48 hours, surprising scientists. According to BBC, microbiologists had been trying to understand this complex issue for over 10 years.
Professor Jose Penades and his team at Imperial College London had been studying why superbugs resist antibiotics. To test its abilities, he used Google’s AI tool, ‘Co-Scientist,’ to find answers. To his shock, the AI provided a solution in only two days.
What surprised him even more was that his research was not published, meaning the AI could not have accessed it online. This made him wonder if the AI had somehow taken the information from his system.
Mr. Penades was so stunned that he even contacted Google to ask if they had access to his computer. Google confirmed they did not.
His team was studying how superbugs form and spread. They believed that superbugs could move between species by creating a tail using many viruses. This idea had never been published or shared. Yet, when they tested the AI, it confirmed their theory in just two days.
Not only did the AI verify their findings, but it also suggested four new hypotheses, all of which were correct. One idea was completely new to the team, and they are now exploring it further.
