Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing healthcare by helping doctors make better decisions and save patients’ lives. A new study shows how AI can make a big difference in hospitals.
How AI Improves Patient Care
The study from Mount Sinai Hospital found that AI alerts can improve patient care. When doctors received AI alerts about patients getting worse, they acted faster. This quick action made patients 43% more likely to get the care they needed and less likely to die.
Dr. Matthew A. Levin, who led the study, explained, “We wanted to see if AI alerts could help reduce the need for intensive care and lower the chance of patients dying in the hospital.” The study showed that AI was better than older methods in predicting when patients might get sicker, allowing for earlier and life-saving treatments.
Real-Time AI Alerts in Hospitals
The study included 2,740 patients in four units of Mount Sinai Hospital. These patients were split into two groups: one group’s doctors received AI alerts about health declines, and the other group’s doctors did not, although the alerts were still created. Patients who received AI-based alerts got quicker treatments, such as medicines for heart and circulation problems, and were less likely to die within 30 days.
Benefits of Real-Time Alerts
David L. Reich, a senior author of the study, said, “Real-time AI alerts help doctors make better decisions and act quickly to save patients.” These AI tools help doctors and nurses provide faster and safer care, making the hospital more efficient and effective.
Future of AI in Healthcare
Although the study was stopped early because of COVID-19, the AI system is now used in all stepdown units at Mount Sinai Hospital. These units monitor patients who are stable but still need close watching. Intensive care doctors now check on the 15 patients with the highest AI alert scores daily.
As the AI system learns from more patient data, it gets better at making accurate predictions. Mount Sinai Hospital has also created 15 other AI tools to help doctors make better decisions.
Improving Patient Outcomes with AI
The Mount Sinai study shows that AI can greatly improve patient care. Real-time AI alerts help doctors act quickly and make better decisions. As AI continues to improve, it will play a bigger role in healthcare, making treatments more effective and focused on patient needs. This will lead to better health and well-being for everyone.
