Meta, the company that owns Facebook, said it will stop using AI tools in Brazil. This decision comes after the Brazilian government raised concerns about Meta’s new privacy policy related to personal data and AI.
Meta will pause these tools while discussing with Brazil’s data protection authority (ANPD) to resolve these concerns. Earlier this month, ANPD banned Meta from using Brazilian personal data to train its AI, citing serious risks and difficulties for users.
In May, Meta updated its privacy policy to use public data from Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram in Brazil for AI training. This includes posts, images, and captions. However, ANPD ruled that Meta must change its policy to exclude using personal data for AI training.
Brazil is an important market for Meta, with over 200 million people and the second-largest user base for WhatsApp after India.
In a related issue, Meta is also holding back its new AI model in the European Union (EU) due to unclear regulations. Meta informed EU regulators about using public data for AI but received little feedback. In June, the EU ordered Meta to pause AI training with EU data.
Meta plans to release a new AI model called Llama soon but not in the EU because of the uncertain regulatory environment. Similarly, Apple will not release its Apple Intelligence features in the EU due to regulatory concerns.
