The Sustainable Markets Initiative and AECOM have launched a new AI tool that helps protect nature while building new infrastructure. The tool, called the Nature Risk Tool, studies any piece of land worldwide. It gives planners detailed information about the habitats and ecosystems on the land, helping them build in a way that protects the environment.

As cities and infrastructure expand due to population and economic growth, this tool is designed to prevent the damage that often comes with development, like habitat loss, pollution, and the destruction of wildlife. In the last 50 years, wildlife populations have dropped by 60%, and construction is a big reason for this.

The Nature Risk Tool uses data from the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). It allows developers to study a site early on and understand the impact of their project on the environment. The tool also provides ideas on how to reduce harm and protect the area, helping planners make better decisions to build in a sustainable way.

For example, if a rare species is found on a construction site, the tool can help developers decide whether to choose a different location or add protections to avoid harming the species.

Jennifer Jordan Saifi, CEO of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, said, “Nature is important for our economy, and this tool will help us build in a way that supports a sustainable future.”

Troy Rudd, CEO of AECOM, added, “This partnership with the Sustainable Markets Initiative sets a new standard for building projects that put nature first.”

The tool will be used at the start of construction planning, helping leaders reduce environmental risks and build in a way that supports nature and biodiversity.
