An AI-generated portrait of Alan Turing, the famous World War II codebreaker, has set a new record by selling for $1.3 million at auction.
According to BBC, the digital artwork, called “AI God,” received 27 bids and was expected to sell for $120,000 to $180,000. However, the final sale price far exceeded these estimates, said Sotheby’s.
Alan Turing, known as a pioneer in computer science and the “father of AI,” made many important contributions to both fields. Created by Ai-Da Robot, this artwork represents the first piece by a humanoid robot artist to be sold at auction. Sotheby’s highlighted that the sale “launches a new era in the global art market,” setting a benchmark for robot-created art.
The artwork, a large portrait of Turing, reflects his time at King’s College, Cambridge, and honors his achievements. Turing’s work in codebreaking, particularly deciphering the Enigma machine during World War II, was crucial in helping the Allies win the war. Afterward, he designed one of the first digital computers, influencing modern technology.
Sotheby’s reported that the online auction closed on Thursday evening, with the artwork purchased by an anonymous buyer at a price well above the original estimate. This historic sale shows the rising interest in AI technology within the art world.
