Tameside Hospital has introduced a new AI system to help doctors detect lung cancer faster.
The tool, called Annalise.ai, analyzes chest x-rays and flags potential issues in under a minute. This helps healthcare teams prioritize urgent cases and begin treatment sooner. The project is funded by the Artificial Intelligence Diagnostic Fund (AIDF) and is designed to spot a variety of diseases early.
Dr. Dilraj Sandher, Medical Director at Tameside and Glossop NHS, shared his excitement about the technology:
“This tool will help our doctors detect lung cancer earlier, improving care for patients in Tameside and Glossop.”
Chris Sleight, Chief Officer of the Greater Manchester Imaging Network, added:
“This funding from AIDF allows us to bring faster diagnoses to our patients. Detecting lung cancer earlier improves outcomes and offers hope for better treatment.”
Health Secretary Wes Streeting also praised the advancement:
“AI tools like this can save lives by speeding up diagnoses. This is a key step in modernizing the NHS and giving patients faster access to life-saving treatments.”
Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK, with Greater Manchester seeing rates 24% higher than the national average. Every year, around 50,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer, which is also the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the UK, claiming 35,000 lives annually.
The introduction of AI tools like Annalise.ai offers hope for earlier detection and better outcomes for patients.
