Apple is working on an artificial intelligence (AI) health assistant to provide users with personalized health advice. This project, called Project Mulberry, builds on Apple’s earlier Project Quartz, which focused on AI-powered health coaching.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is developing this AI assistant to work within its Health app. The AI will analyze data from users’ devices and offer tailored recommendations to improve fitness, sleep, and nutrition. Apple is also recruiting doctors from various fields—such as sleep, nutrition, mental health, and cardiology—to create video explainers on different health topics.

The updated Health app is expected to include food tracking, an area Apple has not previously focused on. This means it could compete with apps like MyFitnessPal and Noom.

Apple may release this AI health assistant with the iOS 19.4 update, possibly in spring or summer 2025. However, Apple’s health projects have faced challenges before, such as removing the blood oxygen feature from its smartwatch due to a patent dispute with Masimo.

Meanwhile, AI is becoming more common in healthcare. A recent PYMNTS Intelligence report found that major healthcare companies are increasing their investments in generative AI (GenAI). The report, based on surveys of executives from firms earning over $1 billion annually, shows that 9 out of 10 leaders expect positive returns from AI investments. As a result, many plan to increase AI spending to stay ahead in the industry.
