Apple is speeding up the development of a new table-top robot. According to a Bloomberg report, this device will have a screen similar to an iPad attached to a robotic arm that can move and adjust the display. It’s expected to act as a smart home hub and also work for video calls.
The project, codenamed J595, got Apple’s approval in 2022, and the company is now pushing for a release in 2026 or 2027. Kevin Lynch, Apple’s vice-president of technology, is leading the development. The robot will likely use motors to tilt and rotate the screen 360 degrees. It’s in early development stages and will likely run on a customized version of iPadOS. The device is expected to be voice-controlled using an updated Siri and advanced AI features. It may respond to commands like “Look at me” to turn the screen toward the speaker.
Apple is also working on other smart home gadgets. The report says the company is exploring robots that can move around the house and even considering a humanoid version of the robot. These ideas are still being researched and are led by robotics expert Hanns Wolfram Tappeiner with a team of engineers who worked on the Apple Car project.
Additionally, Apple is exploring new ideas like AR glasses and AirPods with built-in cameras and AI to assist users based on their environment.
