Coca-Cola Criticized for Using A.I. in Holiday Ads

Coca-Cola is facing criticism after releasing its 2024 holiday ads, created with generative A.I. Known for its warm and nostalgic holiday commercials, Coca-Cola’s new ads have left some viewers unsettled. These ads pay tribute to the iconic 1995 “Holidays Are Coming” campaign but feature A.I.-generated scenes that many found strange or unnatural.

The commercials show classic holiday visuals like Coca-Cola trucks, snowy towns, and festive animals. However, the lifelike yet surreal A.I.-created characters sparked backlash. Critics were especially bothered by the tagline “It’s always the real thing,” alongside the note, “Created by Real Magic AI.”

Many online users expressed disappointment. A TikTok user said, “Coca-Cola just ruined Christmas,” while animator Alex Hirsch raised ethical concerns about replacing artists with A.I. Others pointed out how this trend could harm creative professionals by favoring technology over human talent.

Coca-Cola defended the ads, saying they combine human creativity with A.I. for faster and cost-effective production. The company worked with A.I. studios like Secret Level and Silverside AI to create the campaign.

This isn’t Coca-Cola’s first time using A.I. The company previously introduced Coca-Cola Y3000, a limited-edition drink made with A.I. input, showing its interest in blending technology with branding.

The controversy highlights a larger debate about A.I. in creative industries. While Coca-Cola’s decision may reflect the future of advertising, many still value traditional artistry over technological innovation.
