The Department of Education (DepEd) is starting a new project to test an AI tool in some schools to help find young children who may have developmental disabilities.
This project is called SABAY (Screening using AI-Based Assistance for Young Children). It will first be tested in Metro Manila, and later in more areas across the Philippines. The goal is to find children who may need help early, so they can get support as soon as possible.
Dr. Erika Legara, Director of DepEd’s Education Center for AI Research (ECAIR), said the project was created with the help of doctors and teachers. She explained that the AI tool is designed to give clear and useful results that can guide how to support children better.
This project supports a law called Republic Act No. 11650 or the Inclusive Education Act, which says schools should try to find children with disabilities early using a system called Child Find.
DepEd also shared that they are working to improve learning programs for children with disabilities. This includes better training for teachers, updated rules, and more tools to help children with different learning needs.
