Just last week, Intel announced that Lunar Lake laptop processors will arrive sometime in Q3 2022. The company claims these are the first x86 chips designed to power Copilot Plus PCs, which foster smarter AI.
This occurred during Microsoft’s Surface and AI event, where the company demonstrated Copilot Plus PCs with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and Plus chips for better performance and longer battery life. But Intel says its Lunar Lake processors perform 1.4 times faster than Arm-based Snapdragon X Elite in Stable Diffusion 1.5.
Lunar Lake has a CPU, an integrated Xe2 GPU and a neural processing unit (NPU), which is key to enabling artificial intelligence. Intel claims three times more AI performance than previous Meteor Lake chips because it can do more than 40 tera operations per second (TOPS) — up from Meteor Lake’s 10 NPU TOPS.
Intel wants to put the Lunar Lake chip in more than 80 new laptop designs from over 20 manufacturers; it hopes to ship 40 million of these AI PC processors by the end of the year.
