Microsoft says its new AI tools will help medical staff save time by taking on some of their work. The goal is to reduce the stress on doctors and nurses, especially as healthcare quality and costs are major concerns.
The company says these AI tools will handle tasks like filling out paperwork and finding important information in medical records. This could give doctors and nurses more time to focus on patients, and it could also save money for patients.
Building AI Tools Faster
Most of these AI tools are still being developed, but Microsoft believes they can make a big difference. “By using AI in healthcare, we aim to reduce the workload on medical staff, help teams work together, and make healthcare systems more efficient,” said Mary Varghese Presti, a Microsoft executive in health and life sciences.
Open-Source AI Models
The new tools include open-source AI models that can understand text, medical images, genetic data, and health records. These models can be used to build apps that help doctors and nurses with specific tasks, such as analyzing test results or finding information in patient records.
A report shows that nurses spend over 40% of their time on paperwork, so these tools could be a big help. The AI can also help find clinical trials that might be right for a patient based on their medical history. A preview of this tool will be available next week.
AI Documentation Tool for Nurses
Microsoft also shared more about its partnership with Epic Systems, a company that manages the medical records of over 280 million people in the U.S. Together, they are working on an AI tool to help nurses with documentation.
While Microsoft already has a similar tool for doctors called DAX Copilot, nurses need a different kind of tool because their work is not the same as doctors’. “We’ve spent time with nurses during their shifts to see where they face the most challenges,” Presti explained.
