New AI Tool Helps Teachers with Grading

Two young developers, Jamie Fones and Will Griffiths, have created Redpen AI, a tool designed to help teachers with grading.

The system is simple: students take photos of their work, and the AI reviews it and provides feedback. The teacher then checks and shares the feedback with the student. Over time, the AI learns the teacher’s style and adapts its feedback.

Redpen AI will be tested in schools in South Wales, London, and Glasgow starting in April, and in Powys schools in May. The project is part of a Department for Education initiative to explore AI in primary school assessments.

Will, a former teacher, was inspired to create the tool after seeing how much work teachers have. “I wanted to help teachers by reducing their workload so they can focus on students,” he said.

Jamie, an AI and cloud computing expert, shared their future goals: “We want to improve learning and save teachers time. After primary schools, we plan to expand into high schools and then to the US and UAE.”

The company has received £150,000 in Microsoft grant credits, allowing them to develop the tool for free in schools. The creators are excited to see how teachers use it and improve the tool based on feedback.
