Scientists at Ben Gurion University in Israel have built a new AI tool that can help find proteins linked to human diseases. The tool, called WGAND (Weighted Graph Anomalous Node Detection), was announced by the university on Tuesday.
WGAND uses ideas from cybersecurity—similar to how social media sites find suspicious users—but instead of tracking people, it looks at how proteins interact in the body. It finds the most important proteins, which may be linked to diseases.
According to a study published in the journal GigaScience, this AI tool works better than other systems at finding proteins related to brain and heart diseases. It also spotted proteins connected to nerve signals and muscle movements—two key areas for medical research.
The project combines biology with computer science and cybersecurity techniques. “By using tools from both fields, the system can uncover hidden but important proteins,” the university said.
Researchers believe this tool could lead to better treatments and help doctors understand how diseases affect the body.
