The governments of the United Kingdom and the United States have teamed up to ensure that the most powerful artificial intelligence (AI) models are safe to use. Michelle Donelan, the U.K. Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo signed an agreement outlining their collaboration.
This partnership marks a new phase in the effort to make AI safer. Donelan sees both countries as leaders in this effort, aiming to establish a network of institutes dedicated to AI safety.
The U.K. and U.S. AI Safety Institutes were established around the same time, with cooperation announced at their creation. This new agreement formalizes and strengthens that cooperation, enabling them to develop a common approach to testing AI safety.
Both institutes will share information and may even conduct joint testing exercises on publicly available AI models. The goal is to ensure that AI development prioritizes safety and security.
This collaboration is crucial because AI development is a global issue. By sharing information and expertise, countries can work together to maximize the benefits of AI while minimizing risks.
While the U.K. has decided against immediate regulation of AI, preferring to foster innovation, other countries may take different approaches. However, all nations recognize the importance of international cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by AI.
The memorandum signed by the U.K. and U.S. also commits them to forming similar partnerships with other countries. This collaborative approach reflects the understanding that AI safety requires a global effort.
