UOW to Create AI Tools for Satellite Ocean Monitoring

Rate this post

Researchers from the University of Wollongong (UOW) are working on developing artificial intelligence (AI) tools to monitor internal ocean waves using satellite images. This project is supported by a grant from the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO) and is part of the AGO Analytics Labs Program by FrontierSI, a leader in spatial technology.

The UOW team, including experts like Professor Son Lam Phung and Dr. Hoang Thanh Le, will use advanced AI methods to detect and study internal waves, which are waves that move within the ocean instead of on the surface. These waves are important to monitor because they can affect underwater activities and marine environments.

The AI tools created through this project will help the AGO analyze satellite images automatically, making it easier and faster to spot and understand internal waves. The project will also support PhD students at UOW, helping train future experts in AI and satellite technology.

UOW is committed to high-impact research and contributing to global goals like sustainable industrialization and innovation, as outlined by the United Nations.
