Kerala police have used AI tools and facial recognition technology to solve a 19-year-old murder case involving a woman and her 17-day-old twin babies. The tragic incident happened in 2006, and the police had quickly identified two suspects: former soldiers Divil Kumar and Rajesh. However, both suspects disappeared, and all efforts to find them failed. At the time, the men were stationed in Pathankot.

Nearly two decades later, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested the two men in Puducherry. They had changed their names to Vishnu and Praveen Kumar and were running an interior design business. Both were married to local school teachers.

Kerala’s ADGP Manoj Abraham shared that investigators used AI and advanced facial recognition to analyze old photos of the suspects. The technology predicted how they might look after 19 years, factoring in ageing and hairstyle changes.

The AI tools scanned social media and found a 90% match on a Facebook profile featuring wedding photos. This led the team to Rajesh, now living as Praveen Kumar. Further investigation revealed Divil, now using the name Vishnu. The information was handed over to the CBI, leading to their arrest.

This case highlights how AI can assist in solving long-standing criminal cases.
