Apple may add cameras to its future smartwatches to bring AI features like real-time translation. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on March 23 that Apple is considering adding a camera to the Apple Watch, similar to the AI-powered features expected on the iPhone 16.
However, Apple faces legal trouble. A lawsuit in March claimed that many promised AI features in Siri were never delivered.
How AI on Apple Watch Could Work
Apple is reportedly planning to introduce AI and camera features in its smartwatches by 2027. The camera would be inside the display on standard models and near the digital crown on the Apple Watch Ultra. If these features work like Apple Intelligence on the iPhone 16, users could:
- Translate signs or text in real time.
- Copy and summarize text from images.
- Add phone numbers or emails directly from a photo.
- Search for products online using a picture.
- Ask ChatGPT to explain notes or diagrams.
Gurman also suggested that Apple may add a camera to AirPods in the future.
Apple’s AI Strategy is Changing
Apple has been slow in adopting AI, focusing on steady improvements. The company had planned to upgrade Siri with better natural language understanding by 2026, but progress has been delayed. Recently, Apple replaced its AI chief, John Giannandrea, with Mike Rockwell, a key leader behind Vision Pro.
Apple’s AI future is uncertain, but new smartwatches with AI-powered cameras could be a game-changer.
