Samsung will release an upgraded version of its voice assistant, Bixby, this year, using its own artificial intelligence (AI) models. The head of Samsung’s mobile business shared this news with CNBC.

Voice assistants are getting more attention due to the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. TM Roh, the head of Samsung’s mobile division, told CNBC that the new Bixby will use Samsung’s large language model (LLM).

“We’re going to improve Bixby with Gen AI technology,” Roh said through a translator.

Bixby first came out in 2017 with the Galaxy S8 smartphone. It can do many things, like live translations and recommending restaurants. Bixby Vision lets you use your phone’s camera to get information about what you see.

Generative AI, or Gen AI, creates content like answers to questions or images. An LLM is a type of AI model that is trained on a lot of data and is used in generative AI.

Samsung will continue to allow multiple voice assistants on its devices, Roh added. For example, Google’s AI assistant is available on Samsung’s latest devices.

Roh’s announcement comes about a month after Apple said its assistant Siri will also get an AI upgrade, which will use OpenAI’s ChatGPT to answer more questions.

The Bixby upgrade is part of Samsung’s effort to add more AI features to its devices. On Wednesday, Samsung launched two new foldable phones—the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6—and introduced new AI tools to encourage people to buy premium smartphones.

“We are adding more AI features to our products,” Roh said. “As people use more AI features, they can see the benefits and convenience. I strongly believe that these AI features will motivate people to buy new products.”
