AI Helps Sort Crabs and Track Data for Seafood Businesses

A startup from Palo Alto called SeafoodAI has created a smart device to help small and medium seafood businesses with crab fishing. This tool makes crab sorting faster and easier by using AI, sensors, and cameras.

Their main product is called CrabScan360. It checks crabs in real time and records important details like size, weight, gender, and if it’s legal to keep. This helps fishers know right away which crabs to keep and which ones to release, following fishing rules.

CrabScan360 comes in two types:

  • One for boats and docks, already available since April.
  • One for factories, still being developed, that will scan crabs on a conveyor belt.

Each crab gets a digital record that’s saved in the cloud. This creates a clear trail showing where each crab came from and where it’s going. The tool also shows useful data like average size, how much was caught, and how many were legal to keep.

This technology helps seafood companies:

  • Work more efficiently
  • Reduce waste
  • Follow sustainability rules

With big stores aiming to buy only sustainable seafood by 2027, tools like CrabScan360 can help suppliers meet those goals.

SeafoodAI also plans to make similar tools for other seafood like tuna, salmon, and shrimp, and create a data platform to connect fishers, processors, and government agencies for better tracking and decision-making.
