Google DeepMind has introduced GenCast, a new artificial intelligence tool for weather forecasting. The company says GenCast is different from other tools because it is designed to work with the Earth’s spherical shape and can accurately predict future weather by analyzing current conditions.
DeepMind claims GenCast gives more accurate forecasts than the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), whose system (ENS) can predict weather up to 15 days ahead. GenCast, trained on ECMWF data, performed better in predicting extreme conditions like heat, cold, and high winds.
GenCast is also more accurate in tracking tropical cyclones, such as hurricanes and typhoons, helping provide early warnings about where they may hit.
In a study published in the journal Nature, DeepMind researchers said GenCast outperformed ENS in 97.2% of the 1,320 tests they conducted.
“Better forecasts lead to better decisions,” DeepMind said in its press release. The company plans to share real-time and historical forecasts from GenCast and collaborate with meteorologists, researchers, renewable energy companies, and disaster response organizations.
