Google is testing a new AI-powered image search tool called “Ask Photos,” announced at Google I/O 2024. Using Google’s Gemini AI, this tool lets users search their photo libraries with natural language questions, so there’s no need to tag or organize images beforehand.
Ask Photos: More Than Keyword Searches
“Ask Photos” does more than simple keyword searches. It can search images in your albums or devices if you give it permission. Google CEO Sundar Pichai showed how it works by finding a photo of his license plate just by asking.
Found in Pixel 8 Pro
A Pixel 8 Pro user recently found the testing version of “Ask Photos.” It’s now on the Search tab as an “Ask” button next to the search bar, where you can try sample questions or type your own.
Still Improving
Some parts of “Ask Photos” are still being worked on. For example, one sample question, “Photos of me over time,” caused an error, showing that Google is still refining the tool. The feature also disappeared shortly after being found, suggesting it’s still in testing.
Gemini AI’s Impact
Gemini AI is set to make “Ask Photos” much better, especially for users with lots of unorganized photos. While Google Photos already has some image recognition, Gemini’s AI models will improve it. This means the AI can better find photos taken at the same place, recognize people over time, and organize images more effectively.
Google’s “Ask Photos” shows how AI can change the way we search our photos. As Google continues to develop this tool, users can expect an easier and more efficient way to find their memories.
