Meta has introduced a new AI tool to fight scams on Facebook and Instagram. The tool will detect fake images of celebrities used in ads to trick people.
How It Works
The AI will scan ads featuring public figures and compare the images to their official profiles. If an image is fake, the ad will be blocked.
Where It’s Available
Meta is launching this tool in the U.K., European Union, and South Korea. It has already been tested in other regions.
Why It Matters
Many scams use fake celebrity endorsements to trick people into fake investments. Investigators recently found that scammers convinced 32,000 people to invest over $275 million using such tactics.
Scammers also use fake news from trusted media outlets like Le Monde and CBC to appear more convincing.
Extra Protection for Users
Meta’s AI tool will also help users regain access to locked accounts. Instead of submitting ID documents, users can take a short “video selfie” to verify their identity. Meta will delete the video once verification is complete.
This new AI tool aims to make Facebook and Instagram safer by stopping scams before they spread.
