WASHINGTON: Elon Musk, the billionaire, has informed investors of his xAI AI company about his idea to construct a large supercomputer labeled the “gigafactory of compute,” an industry news outlet reported on Saturday.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO wants the supercomputer, which will utilize 100,000 Nvidia chips for fall 2025, The Information said. He guaranteed that it would be finished on time.

During a presentation to investors, Musk said that this supercomputer will be at least “four times larger than today’s largest GPU clusters” such as those used by Meta to train AI models.

Since OpenAI’s ChatGPT was launched in 2022, there has been fierce competition among tech giants Microsoft, Google and Meta and startups Stability AI and Anthropic in AI technology.

In artificial intelligence (AI), Musk is among only a few investors who are rich enough to compete with companies like Google, OpenAI or Meta.xAI is building a chatbot called Grok – capable of accessing social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) in real time; which Musk also owns.

Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left in 2018 over disagreements with then-CEO Sam Altman prioritizing profits at the cost of broad access. In March he sued OpenAI for allegedly abandoning its original mission of enabling everyone’s access to AI research; the lawsuit prompted claims he had “sour grapes” after leaving open source development behind at the company.
