OpenAI has removed accounts from China and North Korea for using its AI in harmful ways, such as spying and spreading false information.

According to OpenAI, these activities could help authoritarian governments control people or target the U.S. The company used its own AI tools to detect and stop these operations but did not say how many accounts were removed or when it happened.

One case involved people using ChatGPT to write Spanish news articles criticizing the U.S. These articles were published by Latin American news sites under a Chinese company’s name. In another case, North Korean-linked users created fake AI-generated resumes and online profiles to get jobs at Western companies.

There was also a financial fraud operation in Cambodia where ChatGPT accounts were used to create and translate content for social media platforms like X and Facebook.

The U.S. has warned about China’s use of AI for spreading false information and security threats. ChatGPT remains the most popular AI chatbot, with over 400 million users every week.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is in talks to raise up to $40 billion, which could make it one of the biggest private funding rounds in history.
