The UAE is the first country in the world to use artificial intelligence (AI) to help create laws. The news was announced by Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai and Vice President of the UAE. According to the Financial Times, this new system could make the lawmaking process up to 70% faster.
A new government department called the Regulatory Intelligence Office will manage this AI-based system. Sheikh Mohammad said that this new way of creating laws will be faster and more accurate because of AI.
Right now, most countries only use AI for simple government tasks like writing reports. But the UAE plans to use it in a more advanced way—to study legal data and suggest changes to laws.
Emirati political expert Abdulkhaleq Abdulla said the UAE is very serious about becoming a leader in AI and digital technology, just like it is in finance and transport.
Still, there are concerns. Experts told the Financial Times that AI might not always understand legal language correctly. There’s also a risk that AI-made laws might not fit well with human values and cultures.
Despite the risks, some experts praised the UAE for its bold move. Keegan McBride from Oxford said that the country can move quickly with new technologies because of its strong central government.
This is not the UAE’s first step in AI. In 2017, it became the first country to appoint a Minister for Artificial Intelligence. The government also launched a plan called the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence to improve government work using new technologies.
More recently, the UAE started a special AI investment fund called MGX. One of its projects was helping the U.S. company BlackRock launch a $30 billion fund for AI infrastructure.
