Scientists at the University of Sharjah have built a smart AI tool that can accurately recognize Arabic dialects. The tool achieves 97.29% accuracy in identifying different regional dialects and 94.92% accuracy for specific country dialects across 22 nations.
The AI system was trained using more than 3,000 hours of audio from YouTube, covering 19 dialects from the Middle East, North Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. A major success of this project is its efficiency, as the tool used only 29% of the usual training data needed for similar research.
This AI tool can be used for virtual assistants, translation services, and customer support, making communication easier for millions of Arabic speakers in various regions. It is also open for further improvements and has gained attention for its potential use in AI language services.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is working with IBM’s AI platform, watsonx, to develop a new AI program that can also understand Arabic dialects, showing more progress in language technology in the region.
