Hong Kong University has launched P-CARDIAC, an AI tool that helps predict the risk of heart disease. It uses 120 risk factors to give each patient a personalized risk score. The tool will be tested in a study called HEARTWISE, which will involve over 3,000 patients starting in late 2024.
People aged 18 to 80 who have had heart problems in the past and are being treated in general medicine or cardiology clinics can join the study. They should not have any memory problems or physical disabilities.
Professor Yiu Kai-hang, a cardiology expert at the university, said the goal is to use P-CARDIAC in regular medical care to improve heart health for many people. A smaller pilot study, done with the Hong Kong Society of Rehabilitation, showed that 90% of patients had a change in their risk score after two months. Out of 20 people in the study, 15 had follow-up visits, and 80% said they better understood their heart disease risk.
