WhatsApp May Soon Let Android Users Create AI Characters

WhatsApp for Android is developing a new feature that lets users create personalized AI characters, according to a feature tracker. This feature is similar to AI character creation tools already available on Instagram and Messenger.

With this tool, users can describe the personality traits and focus areas of the AI chatbot by typing a text prompt. The AI can then generate a profile picture and bio for the character. WhatsApp is also working on a dedicated tab to display these AI characters.

New AI Character Feature Spotted in Beta

The feature tracker, WABetaInfo, found the AI character creation tool in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.1.26. However, the feature is still under development and not available to beta testers yet. Another beta version (2.25.1.24) revealed a separate tab for managing these AI characters.

Screenshots shared by the tracker show that users can type up to 1,000 characters to describe their chatbot’s traits. The app also provides suggestion prompts to help users start their descriptions.

If the feature works like the AI tools on Instagram and Messenger, it will likely have three steps:

  1. Writing a description of the chatbot.
  2. Generating an image and bio for the chatbot.
  3. Setting privacy options for the AI character.

Dedicated Tab for AI Chatbots

WhatsApp appears to be creating a special tab to manage AI characters. This tab will likely display all the AI chatbots created by the user and other public AI characters. It’s unclear if AI bots made in WhatsApp will be available in other Meta apps like Instagram or Messenger.

While the feature is still in development, it could offer a fun and creative way to interact with AI characters within the WhatsApp app.
