YouTube’s New AI Tool for Shorts: How to Use It

YouTube now lets users create Shorts (short videos) using artificial intelligence (AI). The platform has updated its Dream Screen feature with Veo 2, an AI video generator from Google DeepMind. With this update, users can generate video clips by simply entering a text prompt.

What Is Dream Screen?

YouTube first launched Dream Screen in September 2023 to create AI-generated backgrounds for Shorts. Now, with Veo 2, users can create full video clips, not just backgrounds. This makes it easier for creators to add AI-generated content to their videos.

New Features of Dream Screen

The new update offers several benefits:
Create full video clips without searching for stock footage or recording extra scenes.
Customize AI videos with different styles, lens effects, and cinematic elements.
Faster video generation, helping creators save time.
More realistic videos—Veo 2 understands physics and human movement better.

How to Use AI Video Generation on YouTube

To create AI-generated video backgrounds:

  1. Open the YouTube Shorts camera.
  2. Select ‘Green Screen’‘Dream Screen’.
  3. Enter a text prompt describing your background.
  4. Select the generated image and start recording.

To create AI-generated video clips:

  1. Open the Shorts camera.
  2. Tap ‘Add’‘Create’ at the top.
  3. Enter a text prompt describing your scene.
  4. Choose the style, lens effect, and video length.
  5. Generate the video and insert it into your Short.

AI Content Transparency

To prevent misinformation, YouTube will add SynthID watermarks and labels to all AI-generated videos. These watermarks are invisible to the human eye but can be detected digitally.

Who Can Use This Feature?

Right now, the Veo 2-powered Dream Screen is available in:
📍 United States
📍 Canada
📍 Australia

YouTube plans to expand this feature to more regions soon.
