A new AI tool called the “Adelaide Score” is helping hospitals manage patient discharges more efficiently. This system predicts how likely a patient is to leave within 24 hours, helping hospital staff plan ahead.

A trial in April 2024 at Lyell McEwin Hospital showed that the tool reduced hospital stay times and readmissions. Experts believe it can ease pressure on healthcare workers and improve patient flow, especially in busy hospitals.

The Adelaide Score uses patient data like vital signs and blood test results to make its predictions. While it does not decide when a patient is ready to leave, it helps speed up necessary preparations, such as arranging rehabilitation or wound care.

The AI tool is expected to be used in more South Australian hospitals this year, with plans to expand across Australia in the next 18 months.
