SoftBank plans to turn an old Sharp LCD factory in Osaka, Japan, into a data center for artificial intelligence (AI). The project is in partnership with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, according to a report from Nikkei.
SoftBank will buy the facility and part of the land for about 100 billion yen ($677 million). The data center is expected to open in 2026 and will be one of Japan’s largest, with a power capacity of 150 megawatts.
The goal is to develop and sell AI agents using OpenAI’s technology. These AI models will be trained on company data to offer customized solutions.
The total investment could reach 1 trillion yen ($6.77 billion), Nikkei reported. SoftBank and OpenAI have not yet commented on the report.
