Some people worry that artificial intelligence (AI) might become more intelligent than humans, which could be dangerous for humanity. Although some experts disagree with this idea, many scientists believe that AI will become very powerful. Elon Musk, who runs a company called xAI that focuses on AI, has caused a stir on social media by saying that AI might be smarter than all humans put together by 2029.
Musk, who is currently having a disagreement with OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, confidently stated that AI could surpass the intelligence of any individual human by next year.
“AI will probably be smarter than any single human next year. By 2029, AI is probably smarter than all humans combined,” he said in a post that included a short video clip from the Joe Rogan podcast. In the video, Rogan discusses with Raymond Kurzweil, an American computer scientist and futurist, about the future of AI.
Kurzweil shared his belief that AI will reach human-level intelligence by 2029.
“We’re not quite there yet, but we will get there, and by 2029, it will be on par with any person,” he said, also noting, “I’m actually being conservative. Some people think it will happen even sooner, maybe next year or the year after.”
Kurzweil mentioned that he made a similar prediction back in 1999, but at the time, many people thought he was “crazy.”
“I actually made this prediction in 1999. I said we would match any person by 2029. So, for 30 years, people thought I was completely insane. In fact, Stanford even held a conference with hundreds of attendees from around the world to discuss my prediction, and while many believed it would happen, they didn’t think it would be as soon as 2029. They thought it would take 100 years,” he added.
