Later this month, a robot artist named Ai-Da Robot will make history as the first robot to have its artwork sold by a well-known auction house. The artwork, called “A.I. God,” is a large portrait of Alan Turing, who is known as the father of modern computing.

The painting, which is 7.5 feet tall, was made using Ai-Da Robot’s artificial intelligence (AI) and was first shown at the United Nations in May. It will be part of Sotheby’s Digital Art Sale, which runs from October 31 to November 7. The artwork is expected to sell for between £100,000 and £150,000 (about €120,000 to €180,000).

Sotheby’s Digital Art Sale focuses on art and technology coming together and gives buyers a chance to own digital artworks.

Aidan Meller, the Director of the Ai-Da Robot Studio, said that Alan Turing had concerns about AI back in the 1950s. He noted that Ai-Da’s portrait uses soft colors and broken shapes to show Turing’s face, with a background that hints at the Bombe machine he worked on. The artwork seems to highlight the problems Turing predicted we might face with AI.

Ai-Da Robot is an ultra-realistic robot that creates drawings, paintings, sculptures, and even performs as an artist. The robot was developed in Oxford and programmed by experts around the world.
