Arizona has approved a new school, Unbound Academy, that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to teach students for just two hours a day. The Arizona State Board for Charter Schools approved the school in a close 4-3 vote.
Unbound Academy will serve students in grades four to eight and rely on AI programs like IXL and Khan Academy. These programs adjust lessons based on each student’s progress to keep them engaged and challenged. Instead of traditional teachers, students will have “guides” who lead workshops on life skills like financial literacy, public speaking, and critical thinking.
The founders of Unbound Academy compare their approach to Elon Musk’s strategy with Tesla. They say their private school in Texas, Alpha, showed that students could “learn twice as much” as those in standard schools with less time in class. The Arizona charter school will follow a similar model but make it available to more students.
Supporters believe this innovative method can improve education by giving students more personalized learning experiences and time to focus on practical skills. However, critics worry that the lack of teacher interaction and heavy use of AI might not meet students’ needs.
This new school marks a big change in Arizona’s education system and sparks debates about the role of AI in classrooms.
