China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is now using a new AI tool called ‘DeepSeek’ to help in non-combat areas, mainly in military hospitals. The AI helps doctors create treatment plans and is also used in other civilian areas, according to media reports.
DeepSeek’s open-source AI models are being used in PLA hospitals, the People’s Armed Police (PAP), and national defense departments, the South China Morning Post reported.
Earlier this month, the PLA Central Theatre Command’s main hospital confirmed that it had approved the use of DeepSeek’s R1-70B AI model. This AI helps doctors by suggesting treatment plans. The hospital also assured that patient privacy is protected, as all data is stored on local servers.
Other PLA hospitals, including the well-known 301 Hospital in Beijing, have also started using DeepSeek. This hospital treats top Chinese officials and stores sensitive personal data.
Despite its growing use, the PLA has warned that AI should only be a tool to assist and not replace human decision-making, especially in military operations, because AI lacks self-awareness.
