Chinese Scientists Develop Energy-Efficient AI Chips

Chinese scientists have made two very good artificial intelligence (AI) chips for gadgets like phones and wearable devices. These chips are super powerful but use very little energy.

AI chips are special because they can do tasks like recognizing voices or detecting seizures. But usually, they need a lot of power, which makes them hard to use in small gadgets.

Professor Zhou Jun and his team from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) found a way to make AI chips that use much less power. They showed off these chips at a big conference called the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) 2024. This conference is where experts from around the world talk about new chip technology.

The first chip they made is for listening to voices without needing to be connected to the internet. It’s really good at understanding specific voices, even when there’s a lot of noise around.

The second chip they made helps people with epilepsy by detecting when they’re having a seizure. It’s meant to be used in wearable devices like smartwatches.

Both of these chips are really smart. They use less energy than other chips, which means gadgets using them can last longer without needing to be charged.

Professor Zhou’s team has been working on making smart chips for a long time. They’ve worked with big companies like SenseTime and Huawei Technologies.
