Meta announced their new free AI helper, Meta AI, is now available on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. It’s their biggest move into AI yet.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, said in a video that the assistant can answer questions, make animations, and create images. Meta AI is built on their latest large language model, Meta Llama 3.

This AI tool competes with others like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini. But Meta has a twist – they’ve teamed up with Google and Microsoft to provide search results from both companies.

Zuckerberg claims Meta AI is the smartest free AI assistant out there. Meta AI is integrated into the search boxes of the social media apps, making it easy for users to ask questions. For example, users can ask for restaurant recommendations or help planning a vacation.

You can also find Meta AI on the website “meta.ai” where it can help with tasks like solving math problems or writing emails. Users can save their conversations for later reference.

Meta mentioned that the image-generation feature of the assistant will be in beta on WhatsApp and the MetaAI website. Users will see images as they type, and MetaAI will suggest changes or refinements. These images can also be turned into GIFs to share.

Meta first introduced Meta AI in beta at its Connect event in September. It’s now rolling out in English in over a dozen countries including the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.
